B Complex

Vitamin B or B Complex as this vitamin is commonly referred to, includes coenzymes involved in energy production, optimal nerve health and proper brain response and function. The B vitamins should always be taken together, but up to two to three times more of one B vitamin may be taken for a particular disorder. Adequate intake of these vitamins is very important as absorption of these nutrients decreases with the aging process. Known as the anti-stress vitamin, this vital nutrient is easily depleted through excessive caffeine use, prescription sulfa drugs, strenuous exercise, oral contraceptives, antibiotics, alcohol and may be blocked from absorption by diuretics and cortisone drugs.

Vitamin B and its complex may be obtained in high levels from foods and additional daily supplementation. Foods rich in B vitamins include, brown rice, eggs, seeds, most nuts, soybeans, legumes, avocado, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, brewers yeast, wheat germ, lecithin, and molasses.

Common Vitamin B complex supplementation ranges between 50-100mg daily. In some cases of debilitation or anemia, Vitamin B-12 injections may be required. Taken in excess over prolonged periods of time may result in toxicity to the liver. Total Health recommends foods rich in B complex vitamins and additional supplementation with a food based Vitamin B complex.
