The Colon functions as a tube of circular muscle lined with a layer of moist mucous cells that lubricate the contents. The smooth folds of the colon are speckled with glands that resemble skin pores. These glands extract the fluids and electrolytes from the passing food residue. This fluid - about a quart each day - is recycled and eventually filtered and excreted by the kidneys as urine. Bowel movement is a bit slower process, it comes in large waves three or four times per day. Stimulated by the arrival of food to the stomach, the muscle bands of the colon move the contents along through each section. Once the stool moves out of the sigmoid colon into the rectum, the brain gets the signal that we need to eliminate.
If you have chronic constipation or don't feel finished when eliminating, you need colon cleansing. Common sense and science tell us that prolonged retention of feces and stale waste matter in the colon may, and often does, result in blockage of the passage within the colon causing all kinds of disease. A plaster-like coating can form on the walls of the colon. Colon cleansing and irrigation can and will dissolve this. The best approach is to gradually, comfortably, and effectively cleanse the colon. It takes years to create blockage and buildup to the inside walls of the colon so it may take a series of cleansing treatments and bowel irrigation's to cleanse thoroughly. Once you can experience the increased energy, lightness of being, and the overall healthful feeling that bowel health provides, you'll want to maintain a regular schedule to stay healthy, look younger and feel great!

Common causes of a toxic colon are: chemical laced foods, and pollutants in the environment, over-accumulation of body wastes and metabolic byproducts that are not excreted properly, slowed elimination time, allowing waste materials to ferment become rancid, and then recirculate throughout the body tissues as toxic substances.

Early indications of colon problems include: sallow skin, coated tongue, bad breath, offensive body odor, headaches, bloating, poor appetite, stiff joints (especially knees), lethargy, dizziness, muscle pain, moodiness and irritability, hemorrhoids, skin rash, hypertension, vision problems, palpitations and a feeling of stomach heaviness.

Most illnesses are caused by unhealthy colons: colds, flu, cancer, diverticulitis, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, and allergies are all examples of diseases caused by excessive amounts of poor-quality food combined with bad elimination. In most cases, seriousness of disease corresponds directly to the level of toxicity.

Detoxification of the colon begins with choosing cleansing techniques that are not too extreme for your current condition. Working closely with a holistic health practitioner, familiar with detoxification techniques (e.g., Naturopath) can be extremely important for choosing the type and strength of cleansing that meets your needs, acknowledging any contraindications that may be important for your condition, help to adjust or stop the program if necessary, assist the planning necessary to achieve a cleanse, support your efforts, and finally aid in interpretation of the results. While cleanses can be extremely healing, it is important to
balance the cleansing techniques with periods of rebuilding and strengthening using other techniques discussed in this (e.g., healthy diet, supplements, yoga, etc.). Cleansing, without rebuilding and strengthening, will eventually weaken your system, including
your immune system. Therefore, after each cleanse, take a period of time to concentrate non-cleansing healing techniques. Most people should perform no more than three cleanses per year.
When you perform a cleanse, please try to keep the body warm, comfortable, and feeling as nurtured as much as possible. The more difficult cleanses, are therefore *much* easier to perform in warmer weather. Some people prefer to perform a cleanse
during vacation from work so that the work stress doesn't affect the results of the cleanse. When the body is cleansing, whether through a cleanse technique or simply a positive change in lifestyle, you may experience what is called a "healing crises." The healing crises can last as long as a few days (sometimes longer in rare instances). Some of the symptoms you may experience are fever, headaches, other aches and pains, fatigue, skin eruptions, emotional irritability, gas, temporary constipation, or diarrhea,
and tight muscles It is important to not use drugs to suppress these cleansing symptoms, but instead, to encourage the release of toxins from the body (and the expression of emotions to release pent up emotions when necessary). In cases where the cleansing symptoms need to be reduced and/or toxins are being dumped into the intestines at a large rate (in persons who have had chemical poisoning, for example), it can be helpful to take an action to avoid having toxins reabsorbed into the bloodstream. Most of the time, acute symptoms can be handled with other natural remedies (e.g., peppermint tea for stomach upset, bentonite clay and charcoal, supplementation etc.) It is important to get *plenty* of liquids during detoxification so that you do not become
dehydrated.You may or may not notice sudden, major health improvements
immediately after the cleanse is finished. In some cases there may be a total elimination of symptoms with just one cleanse. Just remember that internal healing can be taking place even if there is no apparent reduction in symptoms. The reduction in symptoms will come as you consistently build your health using holistic healing techniques.

Colon cleanse techniques:
Begin with a fast if possible, one to three days maximum.
A glass of lemon juice and water starts your cleanse and your day out right. Make daily fresh juicing a part of your lifestyle.
Take an herbal cleanse.
Follow with high fiber food, and/or fiber drinks, 40-45 gms fiber in diet recommended per day. The fiber isn't digested, this helps other foods to move along with the fiber through your system.
Follow a low fat, largely vegetarian diet, which includes plenty of raw foods, whole grains, greens, veggies, cultured foods, such as yogurt, and fruits. Avoid sweet fruits, especially if you have a sugar intolerance or problems.
Avoid high fat, sugary, fried foods and excessive dairy. These foods don't allow your body to get rid of waste too easily.
Drink 6-8 glasses of liquids, preferably water daily. Avoid cow and dairy drinks.
Chew food well, and eat smaller meals, and take a digestive enzyme for proper breakdown and assimilation.
Following a fast, use a wheatgrass, fresh lemon juice, garlic or coffee enema or see a licensed health care professional for a colonic.
Use a pre-made colon cleansing drink daily or mix 1 Tbs. Bentonite, 1 tsp. psyllium seed, 1/2 cup apple juice, 1/2 cup aloe vera juice, and 1/2 cup steam distilled water.
