Laboratory tests have proven goldenseal's ability to protect against gram-positive and gram- negative bacteria including tuberculosis bacteria. It helps to reduce vaginal and uterine inflammation.

Prolonged or excessive use may kill bacterial flora and raise white blood cell count. Taking unusually high amounts of goldenseal can lower heartbeat and adversely affect the central nervous system. Pregnant women should not use this herb because its berberine content can stimulate uterine contractions. Continual use can lower vitamin B absorption. Goldenseal is not recommended for anyone with low blood sugar or hypertension.
