Gee, I've got a headache!
Everyone seems to have gotten one, at one time or another.... The most common headache is what is referred to as a "tension" headache. Frequently associated with stress, tension or anxiety, these headaches result in a form of "muscular" tension and may only last a brief time, or a few hours. Tension headaches respond well to massage, relaxation techniques, such as visualization, cold compresses or acupuncture.
Recently, sinus headaches have occurred more frequently in our culture, and are usually caused by congestion and inflammation of the nasal sinuses. They may be more acutely felt when leaning forward or bending at the waist.
A migraine headache may be experienced as debilitating and extremely painful. These headaches may last up to 18 hours and tend to be more common in women. Initial symptoms of a migraine headache may include fatigue, followed by sensory disturbances, nausea, numbness, dizziness, ringing in the ears and mental confusion. Beginning usually on one side of the head, the pain may spread causing the entire head to throb or ache with an accompanying intense, gripping pain.
Cluster headaches are characterized by several painful headaches per day which may persist for weeks. Cluster headaches are thought to be a variation of a migraine and tend to be more common in men then women.
Common causes of headaches may include family history, alcohol consumption, food allergies, emotional stress, fatigue, fasting or lack of a regular meal, sulfites, dairy products, anemia, birth control pills, medication side effects,TMJ syndrome, exposure to sun or glare, lack of exercise, caffeine or certain drugs, hypertension, vitamin B deficiency, hypoglycemia, constipation or environmental toxins. Therapy for the treatment of headaches include avoiding headache triggering foods, caffeine and drinking lots of water with lemon for a cleansing effect. Practice deep breathing exercises, use cold presses, take supplements of the B complex vitamins and get proper exercise, do a colon and or liver cleanse, eat small regularly balanced meals, obtain sufficient sleep and see a physician if headaches are frequently occurring, or accompanied by blurred vision, loss of speech, fever, vomiting or confusion.
