Anthrquinone compounds give senna its laxative effect and stimulate the bowel to move within six to eight hours of ingestion. These compounds do not work directly on the bowel but are absorbed through the walls of the small intestine and subsequently stimulate the nerves of the large intestine.

Because senna is absorbed systemically, it should not be used by pregnant or nursing mothers. Anyone with colon disease should not use this herb unless it is part of a carefully designed formula. Taking senna can cause significant gripping pains in the abdomen suggesting that it always be taken as part of a combination which helps to neutralize gripping. Senna can become habit forming if it is taken in excess or for long periods of time.
