Black Cohosh

Definition: Its antispasmodic properties have made it a favorite botanical remedy for menstrual cramps, muscle spasms and cough. It is also believed to stimulate estrogen synthesis, making it a desirable supplement for menopause.

Applications: PMS, hormonal imbalances, stress, nervousness, muscle cramping, menopause, lung congestion, inflammatory conditions and hypertension.

Scientific Updates: Modern research has supported the use of black cohosh for hypertension and cardiovascular disorders. Black cohosh can help to tranquilize an irritable or excited nervous system while stimulating certain central nervous system functions which promote normalcy. Recently, the value of black cohosh as a uterine tonic has been supported by clinical research. Current experimentation strongly suggests that black cohosh has anti-inflammatory properties. Black cohosh significantly relaxes nerves and smooth muscle and is effective in treating irritated nerves and general restlessness. The Russians have recently approved black cohosh extract for use as a central nervous system tonic and a treatment for blood pressure.

Safety: Black cohosh is considered safe although pregnant women should consult their physician before using it. Avoid large doses.

Complementary Agents: Valerian root, hops, wood betony, skullcap, chamomile, passionflower, mullein , marshmallow, squaw vine, melatonin, calcium/magnesium and B-complex.
