Licorice has been the subject of much modern study. It has clearly established its estrogenic activity. The glycyrrhizin content of licorice stimulates the productions of hormones such as hydrocortisone which work as efficient anti-inflammatory agents. Studies have also shown licorice to possess the ability to counter the effects of two tumor producing agents. Licorice has proven anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties. The properties of glycyrrhizin contained in licorice stimulates the production of interferon which boosts immunity.

Licorice should be avoided if high blood pressure is present. Avoid licorice if you are taking diboxin-based drugs or have a rapid heartbeat. Excessive consumption of licorice can cause symptoms resembling high blood pressure. Taking supplements of potassium are recommended.
