While the liver has many functions, one of its primary functions is bile secretion. Bile is necessary for the digestion of fats. In addition to its digestive role in fat metabolism, the liver synthesizes fatty acids from amino acids and sugars to produce lipoproteins, cholesterol and oxidizes fats to produce energy. Protein digestion and bacterial fermentation of food in the liver, toxic substances from drugs, alcohol, and other harmful ingested chemicals are combined with less toxic substances in the liver and then excreted through the kidneys. The liver, therefore, is considered the major detoxifying organ in the body.

The liver is responsible for regulating the thyroid hormone and will break down other hormones, such as adrenaline, estrogen and insulin, after they have performed their needed functions. The liver is a storehouse for vitamins, minerals, and enzymes that are released to build and maintain healthy cells. The health and vitality of key systems in the body, such as the adrenal glands and proper kidney function, depend to a large extent on the vitality of the liver. In consideration of the scope of liver function, support of liver health is primary to achieving optimum health.

Common symptoms of a sluggish liver system include, poor digestion, food and chemical sensitivities, uncommon weight gain, extreme PMS symptoms, general depression, fatigue, constipation ,itchy, jaundiced skin, and or liver spots.

Common causes of liver toxicity include too much alcohol, drugs, sugar, low nutritional food content, too much animal protein, exposure to environmental toxins, candida yeast infections, hepatitis virus, and prolonged use of prescription drugs. Cirrhosis of the liver is a degenerative disorder resulting in the hardening and scarring of liver cells preventing the normal passage of blood through the liver. Malnutrition and chronic inflammation can also lead to liver malfunction.
