Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson's disease affects the nervous system of the human body in a way that limits a person's ability to control some of his or her muscles. It is caused by a slow, gradual loss of cells in the brain that produce a chemical called dopamine. Dopamine is ultimately necessary for muscles to function normally. In many people, this disease causes a slight, involuntary shaking of the arms and legs, called tremors. At times, muscles may feel somewhat stiff and rigid, and the patient may have difficulty moving his or her arms and legs or will only be able to move them slowly. Eventually, walking may become a slow process of taking small steps. The first step in diagnosing Parkinson's disease is to make certain the symptoms are not being caused by something else. Since there are no specific tests that confirm beyond a doubt that a person has this disease, doctors often base their conclusion on a clinical examination and medical tests.

Symptoms of Parkinson's Disease may include some of the following:
Rigidity is an increased tone or stiffness in the muscles. Tremoring is the symptom the public most often identifies with, but in fact, up to 25% of patients experience very slight tremor or none at all. When it is present, the tremor may be worse on one side of the body. Besides affecting the limbs, it sometimes involves the head, neck, face, and jaw. Slowness of movement is characterized by a delay in initiating movements, caused by the brain's slowness in transmitting the necessary instructions to the appropriate parts of the body. When the instructions have been received, the body responds slowly in carrying them out.
Poor balance tends to accompany this disease, particularly if moving abruptly, which causes a sudden change in the position of one's body. Walking problems commonly include a decreased or nonexistent arm swing; short, shuffling steps, difficulty in negotiating turns, and sudden freezing spells (inability to take the next step). Some people with Parkinson's may also suffer from any of a long list of secondary symptoms. These include depression, sleep disturbances, dizziness, stooped posture, constipation, dementia, and problems with speech, breathing, swallowing, and sexual function. Again, not all people will experience any or all of the symptoms mentioned.

What causes these symptoms?
The actual cause of Parkinson's Disease is not known. It is suspected that Parkinson's usually results from the combination of a genetic predisposition and an as yet unidentified environmental trigger. Some of these environmental triggers are thought to include a poor diet of chemicalized foods, hyperthyroidism, aluminum/heavy metal toxicity, pesticide residue, overuse of some psychotropic drugs, allergic reactions to certain sugary foods, or meats which result in the degenerative changes/symptoms. The degenerative changes are found in an area of the brain known as the substantia nigra, which produces dopamine, a chemical substance that enables people to move normally and smoothly. Parkinson's disease is characterized by a severe shortage of dopamine.
