JOHN'S WORT (Hypericum perforatum)
Applications: AIDS, afterbirth pains, cancer, menstrual cramps, depression, viral infections, bacterial infections, sleep disorders and wounds.
Scientific updates: In 1942 a compound called hypericin was isolated from St. John's wort and used as a natural antidepressant. It can also relieve pain and cause a mild sedating effect. It has been shown to be a more powerful antidepressant than a placebo and many standard antidepressants.
Safety: This herb can cause photosensitivity, although incidence is rare in humans, with the exception of AIDS patients who have taken large doses. Exposure to strong sunlight for anyone with fair skin is not recommended.
