Man is a natural host for six herpes viruses:
Herpes labialis (HSV-1) oral cold sores
Herpes Genitala (HSV-2) genital herpes
Multiple Sclerosis (HHV-6)
Varicella-Zoster Virus (VSV) shingles
Epstein Barr (EBV) mononucleosis, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
And others that carry their special danger:
Vibrant Health's "Gigartina" red marine alga has been developed in joint venture with SeaTech Bioproducts. It is the result of a rigorous search among red macro-algae for the one with the most potent anti-viral properties.
The product Vibrant Health offers contains three species of RMA from the family Gigartinaceae. The three have been identified in the scientific literature as effective against Herpes and related viruses, influenza viruses and HIV.
We know from both the literature and our own preliminary in vitro testing that our combination of red marine algae is suppressive of HSV-I and HSV-II. What we have also discovered is that our particular combined species of RMA is also effective against strains of the virus resistant to acyclovir, the pharmaceutical drug of choice in the treatment of herpes.
Vibrant Health has additionally received anecdotal reports of our Gigartina Red Marine Algae's ability to knock down influenza viruses and chicken pox. This has led us to invest in further (in vitro) testing to examine our product's effects in suppressing or killing flu viruses, chicken pox (a herpes virus) and HHV-6, the herpes virus that is now a suspected as a primary cause of multiple sclerosis.
Polysaccharides and Sterols
The benefits of RMA are presumed locked in their content of sulfated polysaccharides as explained above. Besides interfering with viral duplication, there are other indications that sulfated polysaccharides may block viruses from entering cells, and/or may kill them outright.
In addition, red algae are known to contain a high level of plant sterols and sterolins. These fatty alcohols and alcohol-sugar complexes are now known to stimulate the human immune response even though only a small fraction (2%-4%) of plant sterols are ever absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. It is possible that RMA provides a two-pronged attack against viruses by not only inhibiting the activity of the virus, but also by causing a heightened immune response to actually seek and destroy viruses. Whatever the mechanism or mechanisms of action may be, certain strains of red marine algae with their high polysaccharide and sterol content are quite effective at suppressing herpes and herpes related viruses.
Our Gigartinaceae give every indication of being the strongest group of red marine algae tested to date. We are currently working, through SeaTech, to determine which components of the algae actually deliver the anti-viral punch, and to quantitatively determine the amount of sulfated polysaccharides and the possible effects of the algae's sterol content.
The species of organic, wild harvested family Gigartinaceae red marine algae in this product have been shown to contain natural immunomodulatory and antiviral agents.* Among those tested, herpes and closely related viruses have been most susceptible to suppression.
