White Willow Bark Extract 390 mg
The Natural Solution for Pain Relief
Drug-Free Pain Relief. Now there's no reason to take ASPIRIN or drugs to stay pain-free. For relief from all types of body pain including headaches, rheumatism and fever, White Willow Bark Extract is the natural alternative to chemical analgesics.
A Traditional Pain Remedy
Long before Columbus set foot in the new world, Native American shamans and medicine men were harvesting plants for their therapeutic benefits. On the basis of knowledge passed from generation to generation, these tribal healers formulated botanical remedies effective in correcting all manner of ailments.
Particularly prized by them for its pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory capabilities was the bark of the Salix alba, or white willow tree. Commonly found along the banks of rivers and streams, this tree bears silvery white foliage and takes its name from the ancient east Indian words salila (water) and sarit (river).
How Does White Willow Bark Extract Work?
Willow bark works to reduce pain by blocking the production of inflammatory prostaglandins, which are hormone-like substances involved in inflammation and muscle contraction. Further action in reducing pain occurs through willow bark's ability to inhibit the action of neutrophils, a type of white blood cell. As well, willow bark is an antipyretic, a very effective fever reducer, for conditions such as the common cold and influenza. Furthermore, it acts as an analgesic, relieving mild neuralgic pain, toothaches and headaches.
How Safe Is White Willow Bark Extract?
The British Herbal Pharmacopoeia records no known side effects to white willow bark. However, Aspirin and other synthetically created ASA products can cause side effects that willow bark doesn't. For those who prefer not to use drugs or chemical analgesics White Willow Bark Extract is the ideal alternative, and contains a standardized amount of White Willow Bark in every capsule.
The choice for pain relief is clear. For arthritic conditions, gout fever and all kinds of body pain, willow bark is the proven, natural solution.

For almost a century, Aspirin and other acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) products have been celebrated as the world's most popular drug for relief from pain, fever and inflammation. Yet many people are unaware that the forerunner of ASPIRIN was an herbal medicine. A daily dose of white willow bark provides many of the same health benefits as pharmaceutical ASA products.
Today ASA is a laboratory creation, but 2,500 years ago Chinese physicians used the bark of the willow tree to treat pain and fever. In the 19th century the West discovered the active constituent in willow bark to be salicin, a natural chemical which the body first converts into saligenin and then into salicylic acid. From this model, chemists synthesized acetylsalicylic acid, from which all pharmaceutical ASA products are made. However both ASA and natural salicin work in a similar way.
White willow bark works to reduce pain by blocking the production of inflammatory prostaglandins, which are hormone-like substances involved in inflammation and muscle contraction. In addition, willow bark is a very effective fever reducer in conditions such as the common cold.
One of the benefits of willow bark is that it causes significantly fewer side effects than pharmaceutical ASA products and no cases of any serious side effects have ever been reported in medical literature. It is gentler on the stomach, and has a less toxic effect on the body in general. Another advantage of willow bark is its longer lasting action. In 1972, Steinegger and Hovel conducted an analytical and biological study on salicin. Their comparative blood level studies show that while natural salicin may reach peak levels more slowly than ASA products, it stays active much longer.
Scientific Research and Traditional Use of White Willow Bark Extract
Willow bark has been used traditionally for centuries as an analgesic and anti-inflammatory. As well, there have been various scientific studies done on white willow bark indicating that salicin is converted to salicylates in the blood. There has been a tremendous amount of scientific literature on salicylates and their effects. In its centuries of use there have been no contra-indications recorded on the use of white willow bark, or salicin. Traditionally it has proven to be safer then Aspirin and other synthetically derived salicylate based anti-inflammatory drugs. An analysis of the biochemical mechanism of the therapeutic action of ASA and other salicylate products compared to that of white willow bark or salicin seems to support his conclusion.
Longer Lasting
Perhaps the most significant advantage of willow bark is its longer lasting action. In 1972, researchers Steinegger and Hvel focused their analytical and biological study on salicin. Their comparative blood level studies show that salicin (the precursor to salicylic acid found in willow bark) may reach peak levels more slowly, but it stays active much longer than products containing only salicylic acid such as aspirin.
To date there are no indications of side effects or contraindications for willow bark, but because of the similarity of the ingredients with synthetic salicylates, it is not impossible that the side effects listed below could occur when using willow bark. Consult a health practitioner before taking White Willow Bark Extract under the following conditions:
- When taking other salicylates
- If taking medicines for anticoagulation, diabetes or gout.
- During pregnancy, or nursing.
- If pain, fever or inflammation persists.
- If allergic to salicylates.
- If taking other non-steroidal, anti-inflammatories.
- If suffering from gastro-intestinal bleeding, intestinal ulcers, or bleeding.
- If there is a history of asthma or other allergic conditions.
- If suffering from severe anemia.
When is White Willow Bark Extract Not Indicated?
White Willow Bark Extract should not be used for the prevention of heart disease, migraines, or strokes because it presently has not been proven to inhibit platelet-activating factors. Research also shows that low levels of salicylates in the blood actually increase uric acid concentrations, whereas high levels of salicylates in the blood lower the uric acid level. Since our product produces low salicylic acid levels, we recommend that White Willow Bark Extract not be used in the treatment of gout.
Since salicylates are excreted through the kidneys and salicin is converted to salicylate in the liver, we recommend that anyone with major metabolic problems with either organ consult a physician before taking White Willow Bark Extract.
- Please consult a health care practitioner if the underlying condition requires continued use of White Willow Bark Extract for more than five days.
- If you expect to undergo surgery, including dental surgery within 7 to 10 days of taking White Willow Bark Extract, consult a health care practitioner.
- White Willow Bark Extract has a large margin of safety, particularly for adults; however, accidental overdoses can occur. If such an overdose is suspected, contact at once your health care practitioner, a poison control center or the emergency department of a hospital.
- Although the chances of Reye's Syndrome are unlikely, children under the age of 16 should not take this medication. In particular, children who have or are recovering from chicken pox or the flu should not use this medicine to treat vomiting. If vomiting is present consult a health care practitioner, as this could be an early sign of Reye's Syndrome, a rare but serious illness.
