Gly-Sea-Max, provided by Douglas Laboratories, is a proprietary blend containing a brown seaweed extract and a unique potato protein extract to support satiety, fullness, and a decrease in the normal blood glucose response to a meal.

There is little question that the United States as well as many other parts of the world is experiencing a dramatic increase in obesity. Current estimates by the National Institutes of Health show that two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese. In fact, according to the latest data (2004) from the Centers for Disease Control, there are 14 states in which greater than 25% of the population is considered obese (i.e having BMI >30). Compare this to as recent as the year 2000, when there were no states with 25% of their population defined as obese. The reasons for this rise in obesity are controversial and not fully understood, but numerous factors have been proposed to be at play, including changes in caloric intake, serving size, stress, lifestyle, exercise, etc. In recent years, an important connection between weight control and blood glucose has emerged. The concept of glycemic index (GI) has become increasingly linked to weight control. The GI of a food is a ranking of its immediate effect on blood glucose on a scale from 0 - 100. Carbohydrates that are quickly digested and absorbed result in more rapid elevations in blood glucose and insulin levels. Consequently, these foods have high GI values. Carbohydrates that are more slowly digested and absorbed have a less immediate impact on blood glucose and insulin levels and tend to have lower GI values. Chronically consuming a diet with a high glycemic index can be associated with recurrent post-prandial hyperglycemia, which can in turn result in rapid drops in blood glucose due to excessive secretion of insulin. This drop in blood glucose can lead to an increased desire to eat and an absence of satiety. These factors work together to favor an increase in adipose tissue and ultimately can contribute to weight gain. Data have shown that diets that produce a low glycemic response may benefit weight control by helping to promote satiety, maintain insulin sensitivity and minimize the secretion of insulin after a meal. Gly-Sea-Max contains two unique ingredients, a proprietary blend of standardized extracts from two brown seaweeds, Ascophyllum nodosum and Fucus vesiculosus, and a unique potato extract. Both of these ingredients act to help support a normal, healthy glycemic response to a meal. Limiting or slowing the breakdown of carbohydrates during digestion can lower the normal rise in blood glucose levels seen after a meal. Brown seaweeds have been eaten for centuries by many cultures and are well known for their various health promoting qualities. The unique Ascophyllum and Fucus extracts used in Gly-Sea-Max have been shown to affect the activity of two of the enzymes that are responsible for the digestion of carbohydrates, alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase. Carbohydrate digestion starts in the mouth were salivary alpha-amylase briefly begins digesting carbohydrates in to smaller units until it is inactivated by the acid of the stomach. Carbohydrate digestion continues in the small intestine were pancreatic alpha-amylase reduces complex carbohydrates to dimeric (mainly maltose) and oligomeric units. Alpha-glucosidase (a disaccharidase) is another enzyme present in the small intestine and is responsible for breaking disaccharides into their individual hexose components which can then be absorbed across the intestinal border. Extracts of both Ascophyllum nodosum and Fucus vesiculosus that have been standardized to polyphenol content have been shown to decrease alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase activity combination of these extracts has also been studied inanimals to investigate the impact on blood glucose levels after feeding. In vivo animal data support the ability of these extracts to significantly decrease the rise in blood glucose normally seen 30 minutes after feeding (Fig 3). Slendesta, a proprietary potato-derived extract has also demonstrated the ability to decrease the normal rise in blood glucose seen after a meal. The mechanism by which Slendesta functions is different yet complimentary to the actions of the Ascophyllum and Fucus extracts. Slendesta contains a proteinase inhibitor that has been shown to increase the secretion of cholecystokinin (CCK). One of the roles of CCK, which is secreted from cells that line the small intestine, is to act on the brain and the stomach. In the stomach CCK delays gastric emptying and thereby imparts a sense of fullness. In the brain CCK leads to a sense of satiety. Supplementation with Slendesta in humans has been shown to decrease the normal rise in blood glucose in response to a meal . The increase in satiety after supplementing with Slendesta, combined with its effect on postprandial blood sugar, are key factors in its ability to play a role as part of a plan for healthy weight management. Supplementation with Slendesta in healthy individuals has also been shown to result in statistically significant weight loss compared with placebo.

Gly-Sea-Max, with its unique combination of brown seaweed and potato extracts can play an important role in your patient's weight maintenance program.
