Ginkgo contains numerous antioxidants such as the proanthocyanidins and flavonoids, which counteract free-radical activity. Flavonoids are also known to strengthen capillaries, which can promote healthy blood flow to the brain, helping to maintain cognitive health.

People often associate ginkgo with healthy cognitive function, but a review of hundreds of published studies reveals that this flavonoid probably benefits every cell in the body. In addition to maintaining healthy arterial function via several well-defined mechanisms, ginkgo also functions as a platelet aggregation inhibitor.

Mitochondria from the rats given ginkgo exhibited significantly less genetic damage, peroxide generation, and oxidation of the crucial antioxidant glutathione than the nonsupplemented rats. In addition, mitochondria from the old rats given the ginkgo extract resembled those of the young rats much more closely, being similar in size and morphology. The study concluded that standardized ginkgo extract prevents age-related decline in mitochondrial structure and function by protecting mitochondria from oxidative damage.

The pharmaceutical grade botanical extract in Ginkgo Biloba Certified Extract has been concentrated and dual standardized to ensure the highest quality, consistency, and biological activity. Ginkgo Biloba Certified Extract contains the lowest level of ginkgolic acid available, even lower than the stringent 5 ppm German Commission E limit.
