Tri-En-All 400 by Douglas Laboratories contains400 I.U. of 100% natural-source, unesterified vitaminE (d-alpha-tocopherol), as well as a guaranteedminimum of the d-beta, d-gamma and d-deltatocopherols, which is unique among most mixedtocopherol products available. In addition, 25 mg ofpalm derived mixed tocotrienols are included in Tri-En-All 400. No synthetic vitamin E is used.

Vitamin E is one of the body's most importantantioxidant nutrients. Antioxidants protect healthycells from oxidative and free radical damage. Freeradicals are unstable chemicals formed in the bodyduring metabolism and from exposure toenvironmental sources, such as pollution andcigarette smoke. Free radicals are necessary forenergy metabolism and immune function, but whenan excessive number of free radicals are formed, theycan attack healthy cells, especially cell membranelipids and proteins. This, in turn, is thought tocontribute to a number of degenerative diseases.Vitamin E is an especially valuable antioxidant in thecell membranes, where it prevents oxidation ofunsaturated fatty acids by trapping free radicals. Thishelps stabilize and protect cell membranes, especiallyred blood cells and tissues sensitive to oxidation, such as the lungs, eyes, and arteries. Vitamin E alsoprotects the liver and other tissues from the freeradicaldamage of toxicants, such as mercury, lead, ozone, nitrous oxide, carbon tetrachloride, benzene, cresol, and various drugs.
Related to its antioxidant properties, vitamin E isimportant for normal immune function, and manystudies show that it prevents lipid peroxidation ofblood lipoproteins, such as LDL-cholesterol.While many think that the term vitamin E refers toa single entity, it actually describes a family of eightdifferent compounds known as the tocopherols andthe tocotrienols. Both the tocopherols andtocotrienols are further divided into their alpha, beta, gamma and delta isomers. These two groups ofcompounds are similar with respect to their structure, but do have subtle molecular structure differences. The d-alpha tocopherol isomer is the most wellknownform of vitamin E. However, recent scientificevidence indicates that gamma-tocopherol maypossess unique, distinguishable features. Thistocopherol is the major form of vitamin E in seedsand in the US diet, though it has not been studied asbroadly as alpha-tocopherol. Numerous studies haveshown gamma-tocopherol to have excellentantioxidant abilities that complement the antioxidantability of alpha-tocopherol. Additionally, somestudies have shown that high dose supplementation ofalpha-tocopherols can deplete both plasma and tissuelevels of gamma-tocopherol in the body.Tocotrienols are found in various foods, but areparticularly abundant in rice bran and palm oil. Liketocopherols, tocotrienols function as powerfulantioxidants. In certain systems, there is evidence thattocotrienols may even possess greater antioxidantactivity compared with tocopherols. In addition totheir antioxidant function, tocotrienols havedemonstrated the ability to reduce cholesterolsynthesis by inhibiting the hepatic enzyme 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase, arate-limiting enzyme in cholesterol biosynthesis. Thisfinding has resulted in research investigating theability of tocotrienols to affect cholesterol levels aswell as other cardiovascular health parameters.Tri-En-All 400 is different from most mixedtocopherols products because it contains naturalmixed tocopherols with a minimum guaranteedamount of the d-beta, d-gamma and d-deltatocopherols, as well as a significant amount of naturalmixed tocotrienols.

Tri-En-All may be a useful dietary supplement forindividuals wishing to supplement their diet with alleight forms of vitamin E.
